making orange peel texture from joint compound. testing thicknesses.

We saw some videos here on UA-cam showing how to make orange peel texture for drywall. This video shows us experimenting with different thicknesses of texture. I've also since learned that it seems most effective to hold the brush with the bristles facing upward instead of a vertical angle. There is less splashing on the person if it's faced vertically but it seems far less effective than point...
Creating cheap Dollar Store brush orange peel drywall texture!

using joint compound 45 and a dollar store scrub brush, I'm able to achieve a drywall texture. Just add water, mix well, preferably without lumps. supplies needed: *joint compound powder (I use number 45 because it's a reasonable drying time. It doesn't dry too quickly and it doesn't try to slowly. The number represents the amount of time it takes to dry.) *scoop for the powder *palette knife (...

It's imperative that you prime over joint compound, also known as hot mud!! Yes Red Gard Guard and Aquadefense will stick to anything! However on the parts that have no priming over the dried and hardened joint compound it will peel away! I'm speaking of a primer that's intentionally used to cover chalky surfaces.... and various other surfaces. I'm not speaking of paint that has primer in it. M...

However, I've shown both methods so that you can choose what works best for you. I apologize that the beginning of the video is not up close, but if you jump ahead to about 16 minutes you can see where I do the boondoggle w...

    Several months ago, I found a video that used a similar technique. Looked for it as I had some small - few square inches - to orange peel today. Couldn't find that video but found this one from @alohachristine - which works great. A key could be having the right thickness for the compound. I had mine a bit too thin so it would tend to drip off the stiff bristles.

    This method works good for fine orange peel because your blobs are small specs. The brush can possibly get close to a medium "bigger blobs" but you have to apply alot more mud than you have and it needs to be stiffer mudd. The thinner the mud the smaller the blobs usually but quite a few more variables with a brush vs a sprayer. A sprayer is easier to control

      @SpecsAppeal Thank you for your kind comment! 🥰 I wish you the best on your projects. If you are going to do this, I really would encourage you to try it first on Cardboard box (I flatten my boxes and cut them open for more practice area ) Also, you can use nylon broom bristles from the dollar store, or really any nylon brushes (maybe even a toothbrush!). Experimentation will help you know which one works best for your desired texture. You could really use anything to pull the bristles back for flipping ... Probably even your hands or a paint stick stirrer! But the metal thing-a-ma-bob bcuz I can't think of its name right now 😁 is best for storing and scraping and mixing the joint compound (joint compound is what I used, which means it dries on 45 minutes). Also, I would encourage you to first paint over it with a primer that's intended for drywall. What I found was that on the areas I didn't use a primer is it the paint still had a tendency to peel off. It's not horrible per se, but not as professional as I was going for, so I have taken to first prime over it and then painting over it that with your color choice. But you might want to ask at your local hardware store what they would recommend. I'm still something of a novice at this. Oh, and one more tip that I didn't show on this video, but you can add a little bit of paint color to your liquidy joint compound, so that when you have textured the wall you can see where the texture has been done once it dries, and then you can make sure that you've primed and painted over all the areas. It's just that sometimes the gray joint compound against gray sheetrock doesn't show up, so adding a little bit of paint color really helps, but that's not entirely necessary if your wall is already a paint color and not a gray. I hope that makes sense, but if you have any questions feel free to message me and I'll do my best to answer. The brush and the putty/drywall knife were both from the dollar store. A large bag of powdered joint compound (mix with water) was about $10. Obviously prices are fluctuating lot with our economy issues! 🎶💕 Christine

    If you have premade cut squares. I recommend doing the following steps: 1. Lay out the whole quilt as you want to see it finished. 2. Take a digital photo (cell phone or camera) so you can reference it when you are done sewing the rows. 3. Pin squares with right sides together. (It is possible to pin a whole row of squares. Just try not to prick yourself!;) 4. Do factory line sewing. Sew one square together on one row, then (without lifting the needle) insert the next row and sew one square together. Do this until you've done one square on each of the pinned rows. (I hope this makes sense!) 5. Pull out the last row. Snip that thread, and here you can either cut the thread from the connected columns-- or wait until the end to cut them. 6. Repeat the sewing pattern again. This time sew on square 3 and move across all the rows without cutting thread until the end. 7. Repeat the sewing process until the end. 8. Refer to your picture and lay out the columns (or rows-- depending on whether you pins horizontally or vertically) the way you want them to look. 9. Pin the rows (or columns) together (You'll want to press the seams the same way on each row-- but make the presses opposite for each row. She the following video to understand what I mean. As well as to better understand the chain piecing method that I'm describing in this steps.:) (Quilty: How to Quilt a Checkerboard Pattern-- Fons & Porter) ua-cam.com/video/GRF7NBYjFN8/v-deo.html 10. Sew the row/column and continue this out. Making sure to SEW AT THE SAME EXACT SEAM ALLOWANCE FOR EACH ROW/ SQUARE. 11. Lay out the finished top and admire. :) TIP: TO ensure exact seam allowance, place a bright colored piece of tape on the sewing plate of where to keep the fabric edge. This helps you not cross your seam allowance!

      My grandson is a Chess enthusiast and I was trying to find some Ideas to sew a quilt for him. The idea of sewing the strips had never occurred to me. This will be so much easier than sewing each of the individual squares together. Thanks for the tip! God bless! I really do think the camera work was great - all of the costars too!

    • @alohachristine
      @alohachristine 5 років тому

      Thanks Janese, I'm glad you found it helpful. My one year old is now 8, and I'd forgotten about this video. It was hard to hear him crying because the mother instinct in me wants to go back and console him and put him for a nap-- but at the time I was just thinking "I've got to hurry and finish this video, or I won't get it done!" My "baby" still loves scissors and glue guns and tape and everything he can create with. He's quite an artist and is taking after me! I've even taught him to sew a little too. It's fun to have such a creative child but rather messy! ;) Your grandson would love a chess quilt. Just make sure to sew the same allowance on everything. (That's why I recommend putting a piece of tape down on the sewing plate so you have a visual to remind you of where to keep the fabric edge. If you get a chance (have time) to come back and tell me I'd love to hear how it went. God bless you too! Christine

      Just make it yourself. Use the bottom of an old white t-shirt to create the base part that goes around the neck. Buy a second hand 'lace' curtain, cut it up and sew sections one at a time (and gathered) onto the base. Attach Velcro to the back of the base and you are done.

    God Loves to Tell a Story With a Happy Ending Possum Run Music/BMI • Chris White Music/BMI • Asheville Music Publishing/BMI In chapter one we meet someone lost out in the wilderness. Searching for the road to lead them home. In chapter two we find them with a heart that has been broken. The choices they have made left them alone. Later in the story after trials and tribulations, They find redemption in a rugged cross. Suddenly their tragedy has a happy ending. A happy-ever-after for the lost. And that’s the story for me; Without Him where would we be? Little David would have died at the hands of ol’ Goliath. Moses would have stopped at the Red Sea. The three Hebrew children would have perished in the fire. Satan would have won at Calvary. And I who was lost would have been lost forever. But that’s not where the story ends for me. For God saw the finish and He wrote another chapter; an ending where salvation set me free. He never met a broken heart he wasn’t capable of mending. I’m so glad God loves to tell a story with a happy ending. I am not the only one; I know that there are others. Soon every story draws to a close. Epic tales of struggle that have spanned across the ages. Where before the cross there was no hope. And just before the dawn when the outcome was so certain A knight in shining armor did appear. The story took a turn in a way no one expected. It’s no mystery why I am here. If it wasn’t for His love for you and me, Well the story would have ended differently…

My tips for you would be to make sure you allow yourself to have fun and make mistakes. And also don't worry if it looks exactly as you imagined it. Just have fun! You're quilting will improve as you work at it.-- Don't worry if it's imperfect. Imperfections and even big mistakes will add character and just be a special way in showing your love through what you made! :) I wish you the best! Christine P.S. You can also sign up for quilting classes at places like Joann's, or other local fabric shops. I bet that would help you gain some confidence.

    your voice is lovely and seems you have had some experience with phrasing and facial expression which ties beautifully into your performance. But your control on the top notes despite the cold seemed closed and lacking breath to finish. When the you hit the high notes with words such as see and me the ee sound closes the back of the throat, the mouth closes into a smile. Your air and voice has no where to go but through the nose. Creating that young thin breathy sound losing air to sustain the note to its end. Instead of singing the word me in the high register sing mah ee putting your index finger on your chin to insure you drop your jaw (looking in mirror while you do this will help). It might be that your used to singing through the nose on the high notes without realizing it. If that is the case pinching your nose closed while singing is another way to insure the sound and air leave through the mouth. You ultimately are aiming to see your throat open in the back like your yawning when you sing. Breathing to sustain notes is another thing and takes singers years of training in the classical world to get a feel on how much air to draw and when. But the training how to breath is simple and easily practiced. Take and deep breath pushing your stomach out than sing your ending notes. "God mad you mine," bending over a kitchen or desk chair keeping your stomach tight so the chair doesn't force your air out. Same thing can be done by laying down with a heavy book on your stomach take a deep breath pushing the book up. Then sing "God made you mine," slowly letting the book descend as you run out of air. Keep up the good work it"s a song worth working for and a good cause to have had learned it. You have a gift don't let it go to waste keep practicing to control will come.

    3: ALWAYS make sure that you line up squares. Do this by making sure that when you pin right sides together that the lines are PERFECT(stretch or make pinch in square if necessary--it might pucker, but visually it will look lined up :) *I recommend practicing on some smaller squares with tape technique. (Say a 4 x 4 row--that way you'll be able to see if you are lining them up and sewing with the same seam allowance, and achieving accuracy of square size.)

  • @alohachristine
    @alohachristine 11 років тому

    TIPS for Perfect Squares: 1: Take a piece of tape (colored duct tape, or masking tape, so it's highly visible) and decided what seam allowance you want for the quilt. 2. ALWAYS use that same seam allowance on every square, row, and even edge binding!! This will ensure perfect squares.

    Hi Donotforgetname :) Thanks for the comment! I think in your situation it would work best if you lay down your squares on the table or floor, in the order you want them. [At this point I will often take a digital picture of the lay out for a visual reference for myself (but in this case, it's probably not that important, as it's not a super intricate pattern). ] 1. start either vertically or horizontally and pin the squares together in the order you want them.

    Krogglerock, sorry for my delay. I don't always see my comments until years later! :) I really appreciate your feedback. I had not considered speaking the words first, and will make sure I incorporate that the next time I perform. You are probably finished with your music studies now, and performed already at your friends wedding. I hope all has gone well for you. I appreciate you support and optimism :)
